·          21 million people have diabetes with 1/3 undiagnosed

·          20% of people over age 65 have diabetes and is expected to increase to 60-70% in the next 20 years

·          41 million have pre-diabetes which puts them at risk for developing diabetes

·          1 in 3 children born in the year 2000 will develop diabetes

·          Risk of heart disease and stroke increased 2 to 4 times in diabetics

·          Blood pressure elevated in 2/3 of individuals with diabetes

·          Blindness—diabetes is the leading cause of new cases

·          Kidney disease—diabetes is the leading cause of end-stage renal disease

·          Amputations—diabetes is the leading cause of non-traumatic, lower-limb amputations (82,000 each year)

 

Diabetes Education and Counseling

Diabetes is an incurable but treatable disease. Many body organs and systems can be damaged, including the heart, eyes, kidneys, nerves and circulation. Our Diabetes Professionals can help you learn how to decrease the risks of these complications. Taught by an RN, Diabetes Nurse Educator, and a Registered Dietitian, topics include:
